Passionate thoughts are powerful. But they lose their power at an alarming rate. When your Authentic Voice is loud and clear, you owe it to yourself to do something about it!

Inspiration Has a Short Shelf-Life

It’s one thing to tune into your Authentic Voice but it’s quite another to do something about it. I was lucky enough to have a private session with Brian Tracy several years ago and a colleague in our small group asked him the one thing he had learned that had the biggest impact in his life. He said, when you’re struck by a flash of inspiration, do something about it immediately. There is no question that inspiration has a rather short half-life.

Now, if I’ve done my job properly, my previous posts may have prompted some personal resolutions in you (Your Authentic Voice). And my bet is that those resolutions have also stirred up some interesting emotions (Fear being the most dominant). The principal reason it’s so important to move toward your fears instead of turning away is because the longer you wait, the less chance there is you’ll actually do something about those resolutions. Anyone who has done any summer cliff jumping knows exactly what I mean! At the risk of being slightly risque, passionate thoughts without action amount to nothing more than mental masturbation. Walk through that door that says “Do Not Enter”. YOU make the call.

Expect To Work At It

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that everyone completely drop everything in their lives to follow their passion. Whether its a relationship transition, a career transition, or simply a resolution to turn an interest into a hobby, it could take weeks, months or years. There is planning, structure and old-fashioned hard work involved.  In fact, likely more than you could ever imagine.

Be Careful of the Romantic View

If – like I did – you have a romantic view of what following your passion looks like. I can tell you with certainty that it’s not all rainbows and marmalade. Just because you make a decision to follow that Authentic Voice doesn’t mean that the clouds part and everything gently flows from there. You’ll find yourself thinking about your passion during most waking hours. You will question yourself, doubt yourself and experience disbelievers who tell you it’s not possible. And you’ll work harder than you’ve ever worked in your life.

The difference is that you will enjoy the journey. And your soul will feel fuller at times than it has ever felt. You will see the disbelievers and seemingly insurmountable challenges as simply obstacles in your journey. It certainly won’t be easy but it will be life-affirming, a bit like riding a wave of purpose and passion. I know it sounds a bit airy fairy, but you have to experience it to understand.

You Owe It To Yourself And Your Loved Ones

For those of you who know what your Authentic Voice is saying, you owe it to yourself and all those close to you to take your first step on the staircase, knowing you’re stepping into an unknown world. It won’t be easy and you will likely have to give up on your deep-rooted desire to see the whole staircase, but you have a head start. YOU KNOW. So go ahead and take the first step!
